Save Mon Region Federation against all mega dams in Tawang

ITANAGAR, Apr 29: The Save Mon Region Federation, in a release, informed that the entrance of the 500-mt-long tunnel of the 600 MW projects by NHPC was blocked by filling it up with rocks by the villagers of Kudung, Tsekhar and Yusum villages of Tawang along with the members of the Federation today. Further, the workers at tunnel (800MW) near Kudung village areas are also sent away by the villagers. These drastic steps were taken following expiry of the deadline set by the villagers, who do not want mega dam in the region. SMRF demanded the Government to completely scrap all Mega Hydro Power Projects proposed in Tawang district immediately. While supporting the demand for reviewing of all hydro power projects in Arunachal Pradesh, SMRF encouraged mini and micro hydro power project in Tawang which have less or no impact upon the environment.

Umngot Power Project, Meghalaya opposed at public hearing

Shillong: The Megh-alaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) came under severe criticism during a public hearing on Tuesday for presenting incorrect data with regards to the draft final report of the assessment of the proposed 30X8 MW Umngot Hydroelectric Power Project at East Khasi Hills.

The facts and details presented by MeECL on the surveys conducted for the proposed power project were questioned by the people at the hearing held at Siangkhnai, East Khasi Hills on Tuesday. Continue reading

Row over European Union diplomats visit sparks Protected Area Permit (PAP) revival

Nagaland and some other northeastern states may again be put under the Protected Area Permit (PAP) regime, thanks to the recent row between the ministry of external affairs and the ministry of home affairs over the ongoing visit of European ambassadors to the state supposedly without securing security clearance.

The group, led by EU ambassador Joao Cravinho, included top diplomats from the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Finland, Poland, Bulgaria and Slovakia.

Talking exclusively to Nagaland Post on the sidelines of the visit to the Commonwealth WW-II Cemetery Tuesday morning, team leader Cravinho said “nobody had objected when they arrived in the country and that they got all the necessary permission to visit Nagaland.” Continue reading
